I’m Alex Kaplan, a wedding photographer and videographer based in New Milford, NJ, serving Northern NJ, NYC, and the Hudson Valley. For over 30 years, I’ve helped couples enjoy their day without feeling rushed, while I quietly capture the real moments, natural portraits, and genuine emotions you’ll still love decades from now.
Some couples tell me right away that they are not dress-up people. They like the idea of engagement photos, but they picture suits, gowns and heels, and none of it sounds like them.
Casual engagement photos are the answer, and after more than 30 years as a New Jersey engagement photographer, I can tell you they do not have to look ordinary. Polish comes from a few intentional choices, good light and real connection.
To show you what that looks like, I will walk through a real session at Deep Cut Gardens in Middletown NJ.
They can, and the difference has little to do with budget or formality. Polished means the clothes fit, the palette is calm, the setting is chosen on purpose, and someone is directing the session so you never feel stuck.
Jessica and Daniel’s Deep Cut Gardens session is the example I will keep coming back to. Their outfits are simple, and the gallery still feels considered from the first frame to the last.
Start with what you already reach for on a good weekend, then move it one step up. Daniel wore a textured knit polo, navy shorts and white sneakers, which is relaxed by any measure.
Jessica paired a white dress with a soft tan cardigan. That one layer lifted the pair without making anything formal.
Casual engagement photo outfits work when they look like your best ordinary day. If you want the full breakdown of colors, layers and shoes, my guide to what to wear for engagement photos covers it.
Their palette is cream, white, tan and navy. Nothing is identical, yet nothing competes, so the eye goes straight to their faces.
Coordination means staying in the same family of tones, not wearing the same shade. Each of them still looks like an individual: a structured, striped shirt on one side, a soft dress and cardigan on the other.
Soft neutrals also leave the color to the garden. For palette ideas in this exact park, see my Deep Cut Gardens wardrobe guide.

When the clothing is simple, the setting can carry the richness. Their outfits stay quiet while the greenery, curved pathways and colorful plantings do the talking.
That contrast is why the photographs feel special without formal wardrobe choices. It is one of the easiest ways to make casual couple photos look intentional.
The park works like a built-in backdrop, with clipped hedges, stone walls, a white gazebo and beds of pink, yellow and lavender flowers. You can see more of it on my Deep Cut Gardens engagement photos page or in my wedding and engagement portfolio.

The photography lesson matters more than the fashion one: comfort leads to movement, movement leads to less self-consciousness, and that makes photographs believable. In the frame of the two of them walking hand in hand, nobody is adjusting a hem or tugging at a collar.
Clothes that let you walk, turn, sit on a stone wall and hug without a second thought keep a session flowing. Daniel’s sneakers and Jessica’s platform sandals are easy to walk in on gravel and grass.
Stiff fabric, tight fits and uncomfortable shoes can show up in the way you move and hold yourself. Choose pieces you would happily wear for a whole afternoon.

You do not need elaborate poses when the photograph gets its interest from what the two of you are doing. Walking together, holding hands, looking at one another, sitting close and kissing carry the whole story.
My job is to give small nudges, like turning toward each other or slowing down, and then let the moment happen. That is how natural engagement photos get made, whether the outfit is casual or dressy.
The result is relaxed engagement photos that feel like a real afternoon together, not a routine you rehearsed.

Many couples assume they need two or three elaborate outfits for a varied gallery. You do not.
This session moves from a walk along the path to a full-length portrait, a quiet kiss, a seated moment on a garden bench and a tighter close-up, all in one look. Variety comes from distance, composition and pace, not from wardrobe changes.
Casual engagement photos get their range from wide frames, close frames, movement and stillness, and together they make a complete gallery.

Trends fade, and the pictures you keep coming back to years later are the ones that look like you. A casual approach suits couples who rarely dress formally, or who simply want their photographs to resemble how they spend time together.
The objective is not to make a casual couple look formal. It is to photograph them thoughtfully enough that being themselves already looks special.

Wear a slightly elevated version of your everyday style: well-fitting pieces in a soft, coordinated palette, and shoes you can walk in. Neutrals like cream, white, tan and navy photograph beautifully outdoors. Skip large logos and loud patterns that pull attention away from your faces.
Yes. A garden gives you paths, walls, plantings and shade that add richness to simple clothing, so the photos feel special without formal outfits. Deep Cut Gardens in Middletown NJ is a good example, though any location that suits your style can work well.
One well-chosen outfit is enough. Variety comes from changing distance, movement and interaction rather than wardrobe: walking shots, full-length portraits, close-ups and seated moments. A second outfit is optional if you want a dressier look, but a complete gallery does not require one.
If you are a couple in Middletown, Northern New Jersey or NYC who wants photographs that look like the two of you, I would love to help. I will help you choose a setting, timing and level of direction that fits, whether your vision is casual, dressy, urban, garden-based or somewhere in between.
When you are ready, tell me about your plans and we will start there.
About Me — But Really, It’s About You
The most meaningful wedding photos never come from stiff poses.
They come from the quiet laugh you didn’t think anyone saw.
The look on your partner’s face during the vows.
The warmth of your people all around you.
I’ve been doing this for over 30 years — and I still get nervous before every wedding.
Not because I’m uncertain, but because I know how much it matters.
After photographing hundreds of weddings over the past few decades, I’ve learned something simple:
The best photos happen when you feel fully present.
That’s why I work calmly, behind the scenes — guiding when it helps, then stepping back when the real moments unfold. I’m always anticipating what’s next, so you never have to think about a thing.
My goal is simple: to help you relax, feel confident, and walk away with photos that feel like you — not a filtered version of someone else’s idea of perfect.
Most of my couples say the same thing:
“We’re so glad we didn’t have to worry.”
