How to Include Your Dog in Engagement Photos Without Losing the Romance

Jonathan and Emma brought their dog to Skylands Manor in Ringwood, and their engagement session naturally had two parts: photographs with their pup, then time for just the two of them. That balance is what makes engagement photos with a dog work. Your dog can belong in the story without becoming the whole story.

After more than 30 years as a photographer, I know the concern: you want your dog included without losing the romantic feel of the session. As a New Jersey engagement photographer working with couples across Northern New Jersey, I believe you can have both, and this session shows how.

Should You Bring Your Dog to Your Engagement Session?

Yes, when your dog is genuinely part of your life together. A dog who greets you at the door and sleeps at the foot of your bed belongs in the story of your engagement. Leaving them out can make a gallery feel like it is missing someone.

What your dog does not need to do is join the entire shoot. A dog may have a limited window of patience in a new setting, and keeping that part short can help a nervous couple settle in too. When the dog is there for a portion of the session and not all of it, everyone tends to stay calmer.

That is the difference between a session that feels chaotic and one that feels planned. If you want help with everything beyond the dog, my guide to prepare for your engagement photos covers outfits, locations, and day-of details.

How to Include Your Dog Without Making Every Photo About Them

Here is the approach I recommend when a couple brings a dog to an engagement session:

  • Start with a few portraits together.
  • Use walking and interaction rather than expecting perfect poses.
  • Bring treats, water, and a familiar leash.
  • Have a friend or family member available to help.
  • Give your dog breaks.
  • Transition into couple-only portraits once you have captured enough together.
  • Do not expect every frame with your dog to be perfect.

The last one matters more than it sounds. A dog who wanders off mid-frame is part of the honest story, and some of the best photographs come from the moments that were not planned.

Movement Makes Engagement Photos With Dogs Feel More Natural

A dog is not going to hold a pose, and most people do not enjoy holding one either. So with Jonathan, Emma, and their dog, I photographed them walking and interacting instead of asking anyone to stay still.

Walking gives your dog something to do, and it gives you something to do with your hands. Jonathan and Emma’s pup had a naturally curious look that I could never have posed.

That is why I prefer movement with dogs: I would rather catch what they naturally give me than manufacture a perfect frame.

The behind the scenes video below shows how the session looked while it was happening. Right under it, you can see the finished walking photograph, so the method and the result sit side by side. <!– VIDEO EMBED (TENTATIVE): YouTube “Skylands Manor Engagement Session Behind the Scenes” | video id: {{VIDEO_ID}} | wrap in responsive 16:9 container –>

When the Dog Steps Out, the Engagement Session Changes

Once we had enough photographs with the dog, the friend they brought to help pulled out a few treats. Their pup trotted off without looking back once.

Jonathan laughed and dropped his serious expression, slightly offended at how fast the dog traded them for snacks. That is the handoff I hope for: the dog is taken care of, and the mood is already light.

That handoff changes the whole feeling of the session. With your dog taken care of, you stop managing and start connecting. The photographs shift from playful to intimate.

Jonathan and Emma’s gallery shows exactly what that looks like: embraces, stairway portraits, dips, kisses, reflection shots, and environmental portraits. Bringing your dog does not mean sacrificing the romantic part of your engagement gallery.

Jonathan & Emma’s Couple-Only Portraits at Skylands Manor

Skylands Manor gave us stone architecture, greenery, stairs, pathways, and water features to build different compositions around. The reflecting pool was where Jonathan and Emma relaxed most. That is why I do not choose locations only for how they look; I also watch for where a couple becomes most comfortable.

For a closer look at how different parts of the property can create completely different photographs, see Victoria & Timothy’s Skylands Manor engagement session.

Finishing the dog portion first gives you time to use several spots instead of rushing through one. That is where the gallery gets its variety.

What Jonathan & Emma’s Session Shows About Bringing Your Dog

The takeaway is not simply to bring your dog. Plan the session so your dog becomes one meaningful chapter of the gallery rather than controlling the entire shoot.

Decide ahead of time how long your dog will be part of it. Choose a helper your dog already trusts. Then tell me what matters most to you, and I will build the flow around it.

Frequently Asked Questions About Engagement Photos With Your Dog

Can we bring our dog to our engagement photo session?

Yes, and it often makes the photographs feel more personal. Your dog can join you for part of the session, which gives us time for relaxed portraits together. Then the dog steps out, and you can focus on each other for the romantic couple-only portraits that make an engagement gallery feel complete.

How long should our dog be part of the engagement session?

Usually only part of the session is necessary. Capture several family portraits and natural interactions first, while your dog is fresh and curious. Then have a helper take the dog so you can move into couple-only photographs without distractions, and give your dog breaks along the way to keep everyone relaxed.

What should we bring for engagement photos with our dog?

Bring treats, water, waste bags, a comfortable leash your dog already knows, and ideally someone who can handle your dog between photographs. A familiar helper makes transitions smoother and gives your dog a calm place to rest while you and your partner focus on each other.

Who should hold our dog during couple-only engagement photos?

Bring a friend or family member your dog already knows and trusts. A familiar face keeps your dog settled once the pet portion is finished, and it lets you focus completely on each other. Let your helper know the plan before the session starts so the handoffs feel easy.

Can we bring our dog to Skylands Manor for engagement photos?

Jonathan and Emma included their dog in their Skylands Manor session, but property rules can change. Please confirm the venue’s current pet policy before you settle on a date. Once you know what is allowed, I can help you build the dog portraits and the couple-only photographs around it.

The Calm Behind the Camera

About Me — But Really, It’s About You

The most meaningful wedding photos never come from stiff poses.
They come from the quiet laugh you didn’t think anyone saw.
The look on your partner’s face during the vows.
The warmth of your people all around you.

I’ve been doing this for over 30 years — and I still get nervous before every wedding.
Not because I’m uncertain, but because I know how much it matters.

After photographing hundreds of weddings over the past few decades, I’ve learned something simple:
The best photos happen when you feel fully present.

That’s why I work calmly, behind the scenes — guiding when it helps, then stepping back when the real moments unfold. I’m always anticipating what’s next, so you never have to think about a thing.

My goal is simple: to help you relax, feel confident, and walk away with photos that feel like you — not a filtered version of someone else’s idea of perfect.

Most of my couples say the same thing:
“We’re so glad we didn’t have to worry.”
