I’m Alex Kaplan, a wedding photographer and videographer based in New Milford, NJ, serving Northern NJ, NYC, and the Hudson Valley. For over 30 years, I’ve helped couples enjoy their day without feeling rushed, while I quietly capture the real moments, natural portraits, and genuine emotions you’ll still love decades from now.
Rain was falling on Governors Island the day I photographed Larry’s surprise proposal, and I think it made the afternoon better. The Three Peaks Lodge proposal took place inside the restaurant at Collective Retreats, with warm light overhead and soft grey weather outside.
After more than 30 years behind a camera, I can tell you that rain rarely ruins a proposal. It usually gives a couple something a sunny day cannot: a mood that belongs only to that day.
This is the full story of what I photographed, from the moment Larry got down on one knee to the portraits that followed. If you are considering proposal photography for your own surprise, this is what real coverage looks like.
Three Peaks Lodge restaurant at Collective Retreats offers an intimate setting for a surprise proposal on Governors Island, NYC. Larry’s rainy-day proposal was photographed inside the restaurant, followed by romantic portraits around the venue, showing how one location can provide several memorable photographic settings.
The restaurant has a warm, glowing interior, and the frames show it clearly. Other diners were seated around the room, and an American flag hangs on the wall behind the couple.
Then Larry got down on one knee and presented the ring. I documented it discreetly and let the moment unfold naturally.
Follow the sequence and you can see it beat by beat: the kneel, the ring presentation, and the reaction that comes right after.

Most people picture the kneeling moment, but I keep shooting long after the question has been answered. The embrace that follows is often where a proposal photograph becomes personal.
The newly engaged couple held each other close right there in the restaurant. Those spontaneous reactions are worth more to me than any posed frame.
In these frames they hug tightly, then ease into a face-to-face moment, with the dining room still visible behind them. That is the part of a proposal people tend to replay the most.

The setting gave us two very different looks in one place: a warm interior for the proposal and open outdoor spaces nearby for the portraits. It rained throughout the day, and I will not pretend rain is something to wish for.
But here, the wet decking reflected the lights and the overcast sky kept everything soft. The weather became part of the atmosphere instead of a problem to solve.

After the proposal came the portraits, and every frame was made inside and around Three Peaks Lodge, within Collective Retreats.
The couple walked together, embraced, and settled into natural poses on the wet deck, with string lights glowing behind them.
The contrast is what I love most about this set. The restaurant feels warm and golden, while the outdoor portraits are cool, quiet, and a little moody.

The set also holds the details. In the ring close-up, the couple is softly visible behind their hands.
Then came the evening photographs, when the sky turned deep blue and the string lights glowed. A fire pit and the lit lodge in the background closed out the night.
Together, the set tells one complete story: the surprise, the celebration, the details, and the quiet moments afterward.

If you are thinking about a Three Peaks Lodge proposal of your own, a few practical steps will keep the day relaxed:
Evening access can differ between general visitors and venue guests, so confirm what applies to you.
Three Peaks Lodge is a restaurant and event setting within Collective Retreats on Governors Island. Couples interested in proposing there should contact the venue directly to discuss reservations, timing, and arrangements. It also helps to share your photography plan with the venue early, so everyone knows what to expect on the day.
Yes, Larry’s proposal session included photographs inside and around Three Peaks Lodge, from the proposal itself to outdoor portraits and evening images. Available locations and photography permissions should be confirmed for each session, since arrangements can vary by date and booking.
Rain does not necessarily prevent memorable proposal photography, since indoor settings and sheltered areas may provide alternatives, depending on the venue and conditions. On Larry’s rainy day, the restaurant interior carried the proposal and the surrounding outdoor spaces still worked for portraits. Coordinating with the venue and your photographer helps you prepare a flexible plan.

About Me — But Really, It’s About You
The most meaningful wedding photos never come from stiff poses.
They come from the quiet laugh you didn’t think anyone saw.
The look on your partner’s face during the vows.
The warmth of your people all around you.
I’ve been doing this for over 30 years — and I still get nervous before every wedding.
Not because I’m uncertain, but because I know how much it matters.
After photographing hundreds of weddings over the past few decades, I’ve learned something simple:
The best photos happen when you feel fully present.
That’s why I work calmly, behind the scenes — guiding when it helps, then stepping back when the real moments unfold. I’m always anticipating what’s next, so you never have to think about a thing.
My goal is simple: to help you relax, feel confident, and walk away with photos that feel like you — not a filtered version of someone else’s idea of perfect.
Most of my couples say the same thing:
“We’re so glad we didn’t have to worry.”
