I’m Alex Kaplan, a wedding photographer and videographer based in New Milford, NJ, serving Northern NJ, NYC, and the Hudson Valley. For over 30 years, I’ve helped couples enjoy their day without feeling rushed, while I quietly capture the real moments, natural portraits, and genuine emotions you’ll still love decades from now.
The Robert and Lexi Weehawken Pier proposal happened on October 10, 2026, with the Manhattan skyline stretched across the Hudson behind them. Robert had a ring box in his hand. Lexi had a surprise coming, and her face tells you so.
I was there to photograph it, and this is the story as my camera saw it: the kneel, the laugh, the ring, and the first quiet minutes of being engaged. If you want the setting itself, I’ve also photographed another real proposal at Weehawken Pier.
Robert dropped to one knee at the railing, ring box open in his hands. Lexi stood just across from him, fingers pressed together, laughing as she looked down at him. The wind caught her hair as the moment unfolded.
For a surprise proposal, I stay far enough back to let the moment unfold without interruption. That distance gives them the space to react naturally while I photograph the expressions as they happen. It is the heart of how proposal photography works.

Watch Lexi’s hands. She looks down as the ring goes on, then lifts her hand to admire it in the soft evening light. Then the reactions come fast: laughing, hugging, her hand held out toward the camera.
Robert grins beside her as the first rush settles. There is no second take on a proposal, which is why I photograph the reaction before stepping in. After more than 30 years photographing people at their most emotional, I know when to press the shutter and when to simply watch.

Once the first rush settled, we made a few portraits. Nothing stiff. Robert dipped Lexi against the railing and she laughed so hard her hair flew.
They walked the wooden boardwalk hand in hand and glanced back over their shoulders. Up close, noses nearly touching, you can see two people who are simply happy. The skyline is in nearly every frame, but they are always the subject.

If you’re planning to propose in Northern New Jersey or across the river in NYC, I’d love to photograph it. Surprise proposal photography is about arriving early, blending into the setting, and making sure you leave with every look, every laugh, and the ring on her hand.
If you want that for your own story, get in touch with Alex Kaplan Weddings and we’ll talk it through.
About Me — But Really, It’s About You
The most meaningful wedding photos never come from stiff poses.
They come from the quiet laugh you didn’t think anyone saw.
The look on your partner’s face during the vows.
The warmth of your people all around you.
I’ve been doing this for over 30 years — and I still get nervous before every wedding.
Not because I’m uncertain, but because I know how much it matters.
After photographing hundreds of weddings over the past few decades, I’ve learned something simple:
The best photos happen when you feel fully present.
That’s why I work calmly, behind the scenes — guiding when it helps, then stepping back when the real moments unfold. I’m always anticipating what’s next, so you never have to think about a thing.
My goal is simple: to help you relax, feel confident, and walk away with photos that feel like you — not a filtered version of someone else’s idea of perfect.
Most of my couples say the same thing:
“We’re so glad we didn’t have to worry.”
