I’m Alex Kaplan, a wedding photographer and videographer based in New Milford, NJ, serving Northern NJ, NYC, and the Hudson Valley. For over 30 years, I’ve helped couples enjoy their day without feeling rushed, while I quietly capture the real moments, natural portraits, and genuine emotions you’ll still love decades from now.
Desiree and Ryan were married on October 3, 2026, and their Collingswood Grand Ballroom wedding had fall details in every direction. A large oak tree, pumpkins, sunflowers, and a green suit beside an ivory dress made the historic venue a pleasure to photograph.
The place also carried meaning for them, because it was connected to one of their first dates. Getting married there meant the whole day unfolded somewhere that already belonged to their story.
After more than 30 years photographing weddings, I still love it when a couple and a place belong together. This was one of those days.
Quick answer: Collingswood Grand Ballroom in Collingswood, New Jersey, offers a distinctive setting for wedding photography, with its historic architecture, outdoor grounds, and Scottish Rite Theater. Desiree and Ryan’s fall wedding featured portraits beneath a large oak tree, harvest-inspired decorations, and meaningful moments with family and friends.
Because the venue was connected to one of their first dates, Desiree and Ryan had a real attachment to it long before the wedding. Collingswood sits in Camden County, just outside Philadelphia, and the ballroom and the Scottish Rite Theater share a large historic building.
That building gives a photographer indoor and outdoor settings in one place: the theater inside, and open lawn with mature trees outside. You can see more of my work in the wedding photography portfolio, and my historic Smithville Inn wedding feature shows how I work in another historic New Jersey venue.
A fall wedding in Collingswood NJ gave us plenty of seasonal detail around the oak tree. Its wide trunk anchored the portraits, pumpkins gathered at its base, and the sunflowers in Desiree’s bouquet added another fall element. Ryan’s green suit and Desiree’s ivory dress kept the palette clean against the grass.
Right after their first look beneath the oak, Desiree reached down to adjust the hem of her train over the fallen leaves. Before she could straighten up, Ryan caught both of her hands and took a slow breath, just looking at her. You could see the nervous energy of the morning leave his shoulders, and that unscripted pause set the tone for the rest of the day.

My guide to the best time for wedding photos explains how light and timing work together.

In the close-ups, I stepped in tight so the frame holds only the two of them.
The Scottish Rite Theater gave us a completely different backdrop from the lawn. Outdoors, everything was green and open; inside, rows of theater seats and warm, low light changed the mood for the same two people.
I photographed Desiree and Ryan among the seats, then stepped back for wider frames showing the room’s scale. These Scottish Rite wedding photos add a second personality to the gallery.

At this Collingswood Grand Ballroom wedding, the ceremony took place on the lawn, under the same oak canopy that framed the portraits. White chairs faced the tree, and pumpkins sat at the foot of the oak.
An outdoor wedding ceremony in Collingswood NJ in October has a natural stage. I photographed Desiree walking the aisle, the two of them standing together before the tree, their joined hands, and the walk back up the aisle as a married couple.

Desiree and Ryan wanted their guests photographed together, and the oak made a natural gathering spot. Family groups, the wedding party, and friends took their places in front of the tree with pumpkins at its base.
I keep group photos efficient: a clear pose, quick direction, then a beat to relax.

Collingswood Grand Ballroom is in Collingswood, New Jersey, in Camden County, South Jersey. The same five-story building also houses the Scottish Rite Auditorium. Philadelphia is a short drive away, which makes the venue convenient for guests traveling in from the city and surrounding areas.
At Desiree and Ryan’s wedding, I photographed the ceremony and portraits on the lawn beneath a large oak tree. Outdoor options depend on your date and your venue agreement, so confirm which areas are available with the venue before you build your photography timeline around them.
At Desiree and Ryan’s wedding, I photographed portraits inside the Scottish Rite Theater, among the seats and in wider views of the room. Access depends on your venue arrangements, so ask the venue to confirm what is available for your date. If it is, I recommend scheduling those portraits before the ceremony.
In my experience, the best time is before the ceremony, when everyone is fresh and the schedule is flexible. That leaves room for oak tree portraits, theater photographs, and a short sunset window if the day allows. Exact timing should follow your ceremony start and your venue’s schedule.

About Me — But Really, It’s About You
The most meaningful wedding photos never come from stiff poses.
They come from the quiet laugh you didn’t think anyone saw.
The look on your partner’s face during the vows.
The warmth of your people all around you.
I’ve been doing this for over 30 years — and I still get nervous before every wedding.
Not because I’m uncertain, but because I know how much it matters.
After photographing hundreds of weddings over the past few decades, I’ve learned something simple:
The best photos happen when you feel fully present.
That’s why I work calmly, behind the scenes — guiding when it helps, then stepping back when the real moments unfold. I’m always anticipating what’s next, so you never have to think about a thing.
My goal is simple: to help you relax, feel confident, and walk away with photos that feel like you — not a filtered version of someone else’s idea of perfect.
Most of my couples say the same thing:
“We’re so glad we didn’t have to worry.”
