Overpeck County Park Engagement Session: A Romantic Fall Love Story in Bergen County, NJ

May 15, 2026

There is something about fall in Bergen County that makes everything feel a little more tender. The air turns crisp, the trees go golden, and the light at that late afternoon hour wraps around people in a way that no studio strobe ever could. When this couple arrived at Overpeck County Park for their engagement session, that is exactly the atmosphere that greeted us. Warm, quiet, unhurried. The kind of afternoon that does not need to be manufactured.

Overpeck has become one of my most-reached-for locations for engagement photography in Northern New Jersey, and sessions like this one are exactly why. You can see the range of what this park makes possible in the engagement photography portfolio– but the images only tell part of the story.

Why Couples Love Overpeck County Park for Engagement Photos

Overpeck County Park is one of the best engagement photo locations in Bergen County, NJ because it offers beautiful fall foliage, romantic bridges, wooded walking trails, open green spaces, and a peaceful atmosphere that photographs beautifully throughout the year. What makes it genuinely useful as a session location is the variety: you are never locked into one look, one backdrop, or one emotional register for the afternoon.

In a single session you can move from a sun-filtered wooded path to a sweeping open meadow to a wooden bridge with Overpeck Creek reflected underneath it. Each spot creates a different feeling in the images, and together they give a full, layered picture of who a couple is when they are simply enjoying each other’s company.

One thing worth knowing from experience: the open meadow areas near the waterfront pick up direct overhead light earlier in the afternoon than most people expect. I almost always save those spots for the last thirty minutes before sunset, when the angle softens and the warmth comes in low across the water. That single timing decision changes what those images look like completely.

The park straddles Leonia and Ridgefield Park, making it an easy reach for couples throughout Bergen County and the wider Northern New Jersey area. Parking on the Leonia side is generally more convenient for sessions centered on the creek and bridge areas. Weekday afternoons and early weekend mornings give you noticeably more of the park to yourselves than weekend afternoons, when recreational foot traffic picks up along the main paths.

Capturing Genuine Connection During This Fall Engagement Session

The most common thing couples tell me before an engagement session is that they are nervous about feeling awkward in front of the camera. That is an honest concern and I never dismiss it. What I have found, after photographing couples throughout Northern New Jersey for more than 30 years, is that the feeling almost always dissolves within the first ten minutes- not because of any specific technique, but simply because we walk and talk and let the afternoon move at its own pace.

That shift carries forward to the wedding day in ways people do not always anticipate. Couples who have been through an engagement session arrive at their wedding already knowing how it feels to be in front of the camera and come out the other side of the self-consciousness. That ease shows up in the images before the first ceremony frame is taken.

The best engagement sessions do not feel like photo shoots. They feel like a really good afternoon together that just happens to be documented well.

With this couple, we were there before the first spot. By the time we reached the bridge they were already moving naturally, already in their own world. The best frames from the afternoon were not directed. They happened in the spaces between.

Whether you are planning an engagement session in Bergen County this fall or still early in thinking through wedding photography for next year, browsing some of the real sessions and love stories from across Northern New Jersey is a good place to see how this unfolds in practice.

Favorite Photo Moments From This Overpeck County Park Session

Every session has a handful of frames that stop you mid-edit. For this one, a few stand out.

The bench portraits near the treeline were some of the quietest moments of the afternoon. She rested her head on his shoulder, he pulled her in closer, and the light fell through the canopy in that particular way that only happens in late October. Nothing directed. Just two people being themselves while I stayed out of the way.

The bridge gave us something entirely different in the best possible sense. The reflection of the wooden railing in the creek below, the rust and amber foliage wrapping both sides, how naturally they fit into the scene. We pulled back for a wider frame that let all of that breathe, then moved in close for something more personal. That shift in scale is part of what gives a full gallery its range.

The foliage throughout acted as natural framing in more images than I can count. When the fall color peaks at Overpeck, it changes the entire feel of the park.

After 30 years photographing couples across Bergen County, and with more than 625 five-star Google reviews that reflect a lot of sessions like this one, Overpeck consistently earns its place among the best engagement locations in the region. Sessions like this one are a big part of why.

What to Know Before Booking an Engagement Session at Overpeck County Park

The fall window at Overpeck peaks somewhere between mid-October and early November, and it moves. Some years the color is fully saturated by the third week of October. Other years it holds into early November. If fall foliage is the specific visual you are after, the safest approach is to book a date and stay in contact as the season approaches. I watch the weather and the color closely and adjust timing when it matters.

Late afternoon is when this park earns its reputation. The hour before sunset transforms the meadow and the water areas in a way that earlier light simply does not replicate. Plan your arrival time around that window, not around convenience.

Wardrobe works best in earth tones and deep jewel tones against the fall palette here. Burgundy, olive, camel, and slate blue all hold up well. The goal is for both people to look like themselves, just dressed with a little more intention than usual. Overly matching outfits tend to flatten rather than complement.

The walking paths at Overpeck are well-maintained but you cover real ground in a session. Shoes that feel genuinely comfortable matter more than shoes that photograph well and are miserable to walk in. That discomfort shows up in the images in ways that are hard to edit around.

Ready to Book Your Bergen County Engagement Session?

Most couples who reach out to me are not looking for a formal shoot or an overproduced experience. They want to feel at ease, spend a few hours actually enjoying each other, and end up with images that reflect who they actually are. If that is what you are looking for, I would love to hear about what you are planning.

I photograph engagement sessions throughout Bergen County, Northern New Jersey, and the New York metro area, and I keep the calendar intentionally limited so every session gets the attention it deserves. Reach out through the contact page and tell me a little about yourselves. You can also call or text directly at 917-992-9097 or 201-834-4999.

The Calm Behind the Camera

About Me — But Really, It’s About You

The most meaningful wedding photos never come from stiff poses.
They come from the quiet laugh you didn’t think anyone saw.
The look on your partner’s face during the vows.
The warmth of your people all around you.

I’ve been doing this for over 30 years — and I still get nervous before every wedding.
Not because I’m uncertain, but because I know how much it matters.

After photographing hundreds of weddings over the past few decades, I’ve learned something simple:
The best photos happen when you feel fully present.

That’s why I work calmly, behind the scenes — guiding when it helps, then stepping back when the real moments unfold. I’m always anticipating what’s next, so you never have to think about a thing.

My goal is simple: to help you relax, feel confident, and walk away with photos that feel like you — not a filtered version of someone else’s idea of perfect.

Most of my couples say the same thing:
We’re so glad we didn’t have to worry.”
