Harkness Memorial State Park Engagement Photos: Gwyneth & Anthony’s Coastal Connecticut Session

I’m Alex Kaplan, a wedding photographer and videographer based in New Milford, NJ, serving Northern NJ, NYC, and the Hudson Valley. For over 30 years, I’ve helped couples enjoy their day without feeling rushed, while I quietly capture the real moments, natural portraits, and genuine emotions you’ll still love decades from now.

Harkness Memorial State Park engagement photos can look like three sessions in one. An ivy covered water tower, stone terraces, tree lined paths, the Cutting Garden, and open lawns above the water all sit on one historic estate on Long Island Sound in Waterford, Connecticut.
I photographed Gwyneth and Anthony there on September 19, 2026, from daylight through sunset and into the blue of the evening.
After more than 30 years photographing couples, I value a location that gives me variety without a drive between backdrops, because every move costs light and momentum.
You can see more of how I approach engagement photography in my portfolio.

Harkness Memorial State Park in Waterford, Connecticut, is a beautiful location for engagement photos thanks to its historic architecture, landscaped gardens, open lawns, and coastal views of Long Island Sound. Couples can capture romantic portraits in several distinctive settings without traveling between multiple venues.
Most outdoor locations give you one look. Harkness Memorial State Park engagement photos rarely look like one place, because Connecticut State Parks describes the estate as 230 seaside acres of lawns, large trees, and gardens surrounding Eolia, the Harkness family’s summer mansion.
A close portrait needs a soft, simple background, and a wide frame needs a sense of place. Here I can move from one to the other in a few minutes on foot.
The lawns look out over a salt marsh toward Long Island Sound, so the same spot reads differently in afternoon light and at sunset.
Long sightlines also let me work from a distance, and couples tend to relax once the camera isn’t three feet away. Closer to home, my guide to Deep Cut Gardens engagement locations shows the same idea on a smaller scale.
Gwyneth wore a deep green wrap dress, and Anthony wore a light blue button down with light trousers. Nothing matched exactly, and nothing needed to. Her green sat naturally against the lawns and ivy, while his lighter tones kept him from disappearing into the trees.
That’s the balance I look for when couples ask what to wear. Their Harkness Memorial State Park engagement session moved from quiet frames on the lawn to kisses and big laughs.

We built this session around the way Harkness changes from day to night. While the sun was up, I worked with natural light across the lawns, paths, and gardens. As it set, the sky over the water became part of every frame.
Even as day turned to night, we kept making strong photographs. I added artificial light to Gwyneth and Anthony and let the changing evening sky carry the background.
For the last frames they changed into shirts with their names on the back and brought out a volleyball. The photographs turned playful. In one, the ball hangs in the air above Gwyneth as she laughs with her arms out.

Still deciding whether a session is worth booking? Here’s why engagement sessions are worth it.
These are the Harkness Memorial State Park engagement photography locations that carried this gallery.
The estate’s ivy covered water tower, built in 1910 and designed by James Gamble Rogers, anchors the widest frame in their gallery.
Closer in, the stone facade of Eolia, the Harkness mansion, plus balustrades and a brick terrace give portraits structure. Couples who want Eolia Mansion engagement photos should check what’s booked first, since the mansion hosts weddings and private events.

The paths under the old shade trees are where I ask couples to walk, talk, and mostly ignore me. On a hedge lined stretch, they walked toward me hand in hand, looking at each other instead of the lens: Harkness engagement photography at its simplest.

Their garden frames come from the Cutting Garden, where flowers grow in long rows. In mid September the sunflowers stood tall around them, making close, almost enclosed portraits.
With busy color, I keep the couple large in the frame and let the flowers fall soft.

On a clear day, the state says, you can see from Harkness to Fishers Island and the North Fork. That makes the park a standout for Connecticut coastal engagement photography.
Their sunset frames show why: open lawn in front, the marsh catching the last light below, and the Sound on the horizon. Rather than filling every frame with the couple, I want some photographs to show the space around them.

Plan around light and park hours first, then wardrobe. Choose comfortable shoes and outfits that sit well against gardens and coastal scenery, leave time to walk between settings, and confirm current park hours, photography rules, and scheduled mansion events with Connecticut State Parks before you book.
Greens, soft blues, creams, and muted tones sit comfortably against lawns and gardens. Wear shoes you can walk in, and keep a second evening look simple.
The tower, terraces, paths, gardens, and coast are spread out. I’d rather build in ten unhurried minutes of walking than rush a couple between backdrops.
The park lists its hours as 8 a.m. to sunset, so plan around them. Morning, or the stretch before sunset, gives softer light than midday, when the open lawns are unforgiving.
For fall engagement photos at Harkness Memorial State Park, sunset moves earlier every week, so build the schedule backward from it.
Harkness Memorial State Park is at 275 Great Neck Road in Waterford, Connecticut, along Long Island Sound. The park is open daily from 8 a.m. to sunset.
The strongest spots are the landscaped gardens, historic architecture such as the ivy covered water tower and the Eolia mansion, the tree lined paths, the open lawns, and the coastal views across Long Island Sound.
Choose comfortable, coordinated outfits that complement the greens and soft natural tones of the park without matching each other exactly. Add shoes you can walk in on grass and paved paths.
Photography requirements can depend on the type of session and current park rules. Contact Connecticut State Parks for current guidance before you book, and don’t assume a past session’s rules still apply.
I’m based in Northern New Jersey and photograph engagement sessions across New Jersey, New York, and Connecticut. What I enjoy most is what Harkness made easy: real interaction between two people, in a place that’s beautiful and means something to them.
Much of my work is with couples who tell me they hate having their picture taken, and a property with this much room to walk is an easy place to start.

About Me — But Really, It’s About You
The most meaningful wedding photos never come from stiff poses.
They come from the quiet laugh you didn’t think anyone saw.
The look on your partner’s face during the vows.
The warmth of your people all around you.
I’ve been doing this for over 30 years — and I still get nervous before every wedding.
Not because I’m uncertain, but because I know how much it matters.
After photographing hundreds of weddings over the past few decades, I’ve learned something simple:
The best photos happen when you feel fully present.
That’s why I work calmly, behind the scenes — guiding when it helps, then stepping back when the real moments unfold. I’m always anticipating what’s next, so you never have to think about a thing.
My goal is simple: to help you relax, feel confident, and walk away with photos that feel like you — not a filtered version of someone else’s idea of perfect.
Most of my couples say the same thing:
“We’re so glad we didn’t have to worry.”
