A Kids’ Birthday Party at Crossbar NYC: Candid Family Photography on the Upper West Side

I’m Alex Kaplan, a wedding photographer and videographer based in New Milford, NJ, serving Northern NJ, NYC, and the Hudson Valley. For over 30 years, I’ve helped couples enjoy their day without feeling rushed, while I quietly capture the real moments, natural portraits, and genuine emotions you’ll still love decades from now.

River and Rory celebrated their birthdays together at Crossbar NYC on September 27, 2026, and I photographed the party from eleven until one. This is Crossbar NYC birthday party photography from a real family celebration: kids on the indoor soccer turf, a bounce house in steady use, two cakes, and a small group of friends and family.
I’ve spent more than 30 years photographing weddings, family photography sessions, and events across New York City and New Jersey. A kids’ party is about as unscripted as an event gets, and that’s the appeal.

Crossbar NYC offers an indoor celebration space on Manhattan’s Upper West Side with a mini soccer field where children can play while families gather. For River and Rory’s birthday celebration, I photographed candid playtime, family portraits, and the little interactions that made the event personal.
Crossbar sits on West 86th Street at Broadway. Crossbar’s private event space pairs a mini soccer field with a private cafe, so kids can play on the turf while the adults eat and talk in the same space.
For this Crossbar NYC birthday party, a bounce house with a slide was set up right on the field.

Photographically, the room does a lot of the work. Padded walls line the field with big soccer murals above them, so the kids stand out against a simple background instead of party clutter.
That’s what makes Crossbar NYC birthday party photography easier than most party rooms. Off the field, the party tables sat against exposed brick, with balloons overhead and a coffee counter along one side.

Most of what I photographed at Crossbar happened without any direction from me. River and a friend yelled from the top of the bounce house slide while Rory crawled toward the bottom of it.
Rory, down on the turf with a red soccer ball, laughed straight into the lens. This is the documentary side of children’s birthday party photography in Manhattan: I keep moving, stay low, and let the kids set the pace.

Candid family event photography in NYC also means the quieter frames in between. An older guest knelt on the turf to talk with River, who was holding a Pete the Cat book, while Rory sat nearby looking somewhere else entirely.

In another frame, Rory reaches from Rachel’s arms toward a guest carrying her own baby, and the guest is laughing. I’ve written more general birthday party photography tips elsewhere; this post is about one party in one room.

Candid coverage shows what the party felt like. Family and group portraits make sure everyone who came is in the record, including the adults who usually end up behind the camera.
Two hours goes quickly with two birthdays in one party. My approach is to keep portraits short and planned, then send everyone back to the party, so the posed photographs never take over the event.
River, Rory, and their parents stood together on the turf for the family portrait at the top of this post, soccer murals behind them. One group frame has the kids sitting shoulder to shoulder inside a mini soccer goal, with River out front grinning.

That mix of planned frames and candid ones is what I’d want from Crossbar NYC birthday party photography for any family booking the space.
Each child had a cake of their own: Happy Birthday River with a toy race car on top, and Happy Birthday Rory with a toy pickup truck. When River’s candles were lit, family gathered in close and clapped while he blew them out.

At the party table, River sat with a plastic fork in hand and frosting on his lip.

I first photographed Rachel on her wedding day, so stepping into her kids’ birthday party felt less like a new job and more like catching up with an old friend. It was a small gathering, just a few friends and family, the kind of afternoon where everyone already knows each other.
Somewhere in the middle of it, I caught Rachel standing off to the side, quietly watching her kids take it all in. It was the same family I’d met years ago, only bigger now, and I felt lucky to be asked back to see it.
Between the wedding and this party, Rachel also brought me in for family photographs. That continuity is the part of this work I value most, and you can read more about my background and approach.

If you’re planning a kids’ birthday at Crossbar, somewhere else on the Upper West Side, or anywhere in Manhattan, I’d be glad to photograph it. Families looking for an Upper West Side birthday party photographer, or a kids birthday party photographer in NYC, can also find me closer to home in Northern New Jersey.
I cover birthdays, family milestones, and private events. Tell me the date, the venue, and who will be there, and contact me about your event.

About Me — But Really, It’s About You
The most meaningful wedding photos never come from stiff poses.
They come from the quiet laugh you didn’t think anyone saw.
The look on your partner’s face during the vows.
The warmth of your people all around you.
I’ve been doing this for over 30 years — and I still get nervous before every wedding.
Not because I’m uncertain, but because I know how much it matters.
After photographing hundreds of weddings over the past few decades, I’ve learned something simple:
The best photos happen when you feel fully present.
That’s why I work calmly, behind the scenes — guiding when it helps, then stepping back when the real moments unfold. I’m always anticipating what’s next, so you never have to think about a thing.
My goal is simple: to help you relax, feel confident, and walk away with photos that feel like you — not a filtered version of someone else’s idea of perfect.
Most of my couples say the same thing:
“We’re so glad we didn’t have to worry.”
