Wedding Photo Checklist: 15 Must-Have Moments You Can’t Miss on Your Big Day

February 26, 2026

After photographing over 800 weddings across Northern New Jersey and New York City, one thing I hear all the time is: “We forgot to get a photo of…”

It happens. The day moves fast. One moment you’re getting ready, and the next you’re cutting the cake and wondering where the last eight hours went.

That’s exactly why I put together this wedding photo checklist. So you don’t have to rely on memory or a Pinterest board you bookmarked at midnight. These are the 15 shots that matter most at Northern New Jersey wedding venues and NYC celebrations alike. The ones that, years from now, you’ll be genuinely glad you have.

Why a Wedding Photo Checklist Actually Matters

A shot list isn’t about being rigid. It’s about being prepared. When you and your photographer are on the same page before the wedding, you’re free to be present in the moment. No one is chasing you down for a photo you forgot to mention. The day flows, and that’s when the real moments happen.

If you want to know more about how I work and what couples can expect, the about page gives you a real sense of my approach from first conversation to final gallery delivery.

Think of this list as a starting point. Every wedding is different, and I always tailor coverage to fit what matters most to each couple. And if you’re still in the early planning stage, it’s worth browsing some wedding proposal ideas too. A lot of couples find me right around that time.

Getting Ready: The Moments Before It All Begins

These first five shots set the tone for your entire gallery. Don’t rush through them.

1. The details. Dress, shoes, rings, florals. These are the quiet, beautiful things you spent months choosing. Lay them out. We’ll photograph them before anything else. And if there’s anything unique (an heirloom, a surprise gift, something sentimental), tell me ahead of time so I can watch for it.

2. Getting dressed or suited up. Not staged. Just the real moment of putting it all together. These photos always carry more emotion than people expect.

3. The first look at the mirror. That moment when it all clicks. This one is easy to miss if we don’t plan for it.

4. Candid moments with your wedding party. Laughing, helping with the veil, fixing the tie. The real ones. Not everyone lined up stiffly.

5. Portraits with parents. One of the most important shots on this whole list. Especially the bride with her father, and the groom with his mother. Don’t skip these.

Ceremony Shots You Cannot Afford to Miss

6. The processional. Every entrance matters. Flower girl, parents, wedding party, and of course the first look down the aisle.

7. Your partner’s reaction. This is the one most couples wish they had more of. When you walk in, your partner’s face tells the whole story. I position specifically for this at every wedding, whether it’s an intimate ceremony in Bergen County or a ballroom full of guests in NYC.

8. The exchange of rings. Close. Real. Emotional. This is one shot where the details make all the difference.

9. The first kiss. It goes fast. I’m ready.

10. The recessional. Pure joy. You’re married. The energy in this moment is unlike anything else in the day.

Portrait Time: Just the Two of You

This section doesn’t need to take an hour. Even 20 minutes in the right light, at the right location, gives you images you’ll have forever.

11. Couple portraits. At least one strong location. This is where the day slows down for a few minutes and it’s just the two of you. I make it easy and comfortable, even for couples who say they hate being photographed.

12. Wedding party group shot. Get everyone together while you still have them in one place.

13. Immediate family formals. Keep the list tight and specific. Four or five key combinations, done efficiently.

For a feel of how these portraits come together, browse the wedding portfolio. Real couples, genuine light, moments that last.

Reception Moments Worth Every Frame

14. First dance. Planned or spontaneous, this one always delivers. The twirl, the dip, the private whisper between you two. Every detail gets captured.

15. Candid reception moments. The toast reactions, the grandparent on the dance floor, the kids running around, the quiet conversation between old friends. These are the photos that make people laugh and cry at the same time.

Quick FAQ: Shot Lists, Family Photos, and Timing

Do we need to send you a shot list? Yes, but keep it to your top 10 to 20 priorities. It helps me protect the moments you care about most without turning the day into a lineup session.

When should we send the family photo list? A few weeks before the wedding is perfect, once you know who is definitely attending. Last-minute changes happen. Just flag them early when you can.

How long do portraits actually need? Even 15 to 25 minutes in good light can give you a full set of portraits. The key is building that breathing room into your timeline before it gets tight.

What if family photos get chaotic? That’s normal. I keep it organized and moving quickly so you’re not stuck doing lineups during cocktail hour.

Who walks down the aisle, and in what order? There’s tradition, and there’s what fits your family. Both are fine. The most important thing is deciding what feels right to you and letting me know in advance so I’m positioned correctly.

What if we want video too? A lot of couples add a wedding film to their package. I photograph and film weddings across Northern NJ and NYC, and I send sneak peeks within 48 to 72 hours so you can relive it right away.

The Calm Behind the Camera

About Me — But Really, It’s About You

The most meaningful wedding photos never come from stiff poses.
They come from the quiet laugh you didn’t think anyone saw.
The look on your partner’s face during the vows.
The warmth of your people all around you.

I’ve been doing this for over 30 years — and I still get nervous before every wedding.
Not because I’m uncertain, but because I know how much it matters.

After photographing hundreds of weddings over the past few decades, I’ve learned something simple:
The best photos happen when you feel fully present.

That’s why I work calmly, behind the scenes — guiding when it helps, then stepping back when the real moments unfold. I’m always anticipating what’s next, so you never have to think about a thing.

My goal is simple: to help you relax, feel confident, and walk away with photos that feel like you — not a filtered version of someone else’s idea of perfect.

Most of my couples say the same thing:
We’re so glad we didn’t have to worry.”
