I’m Alex Kaplan, a wedding photographer and videographer based in New Milford, NJ, serving Northern NJ, NYC, and the Hudson Valley. For over 30 years, I’ve helped couples enjoy their day without feeling rushed — while I quietly capture the real moments, natural portraits, and genuine emotions you’ll still love decades from now.

When Ana Paulina stepped into her Winter Wonderland Sweet Sixteen at The Elan Lodi NJ, you could feel something shift in the room. I’ve shot enough celebrations at this Route 46 venue to recognize that moment when a night goes from good to unforgettable—and I knew within the first five minutes this was going to be one of those nights.
The ballroom transformation was next-level. Balloon arches in blues, whites, and metallics curved across every corner, and at the center of it all sat this white and gold throne that looked like it belonged in an actual palace. But it wasn’t the decorations that made this special—it was watching Ana Paulina walk into a space designed entirely around her dream.

Behind the scenes, the getting ready process was already in full swing. Ana Paulina sat for final touches while her family watched it all unfold. That makeup kit spread across the counter told you everything—this wasn’t just any birthday party, this was a full production.
I could tell right away this wasn’t your typical Sweet Sixteen at The Elan. The Winter Wonderland theme wasn’t just decorations—it was about making Ana Paulina feel like the princess she’d always imagined being. And that dress? That silver and blue ballgown with rose gold details was absolutely stunning.

The family portraits got everyone together—parents, siblings, all dressed to match the Winter Wonderland theme. Ana Paulina’s mom wore this gorgeous navy blue gown, dad rocked a light blue suit, and the younger siblings coordinated perfectly. When you’re looking back at this celebration in 2045, these are the shots you’ll be grateful you took.

Just the three of them—mom, dad, and their daughter on her big day. You could see it all over their faces—this was their little girl’s moment, and they were soaking in every second.

The shoe ceremony hit me right in the heart. Watching Ana Paulina’s father kneel down to help transition her from flats to heels—that symbolic moment of moving from childhood to young adulthood—everyone in the ballroom understood the weight of it. As a Bergen County Sweet Sixteen photographer, I’ve witnessed this tradition dozens of times, but it never stops meaning something.

Then came the crowning moment—literally. Ana Paulina’s mom carefully placed the crystal tiara on her daughter’s head while family looked on. The court of honor stood by with their gifts, witnessing this whole transition. You could feel the significance of it.

Ana Paulina’s entrance into the main ballroom was everything. That confidence, that dress catching the uplighting, everyone’s phones up capturing the moment—this is the entrance you dream about when you’re planning your Sweet Sixteen.

The father-daughter dance was pure cinema. The Elan’s lighting team went all out with the fog machine, creating thick clouds that made them look like they were dancing on air. The turquoise uplighting bounced off the fog, and I’m not exaggerating—it looked like something out of a movie.

Then came the mother-daughter dance. Mom kissing Ana Paulina’s head while they held each other close—this is why I do what I do. These moments of pure connection, no performance, just love.

This angle caught everything—Ana Paulina’s face, her mom holding her tight, that connection between them. This is exactly why I love shooting Sweet Sixteens at The Elan. Real emotion, zero pretense, just families celebrating the people they love.

When grandmother took the mic, the room went silent. Her words hit hard—decades of wisdom and love poured into three minutes—and Ana Paulina sat there on her throne trying not to lose it. These are the moments that stay with you long after the party ends.

Mom grabbed the mic next, dad standing beside her, both of them looking at their daughter. The giant lit “16” numbers behind them, the perfectly styled balloon garland, Ana Paulina glowing on her throne—this whole setup was worth every penny they invested.

Ana Paulina took a moment for a formal portrait on that white and gold throne. Poised, elegant, every inch the princess. The Elan’s starlight backdrop lit up behind her, and those balloon arches framed her perfectly. This is the shot that ends up on the wall in the family room.

But let’s be real—it wasn’t all tears. Ana Paulina’s court and friends gathered around the throne for this joyful group shot. Everyone dressed up, everyone celebrating, pure teenage energy filling the frame.

The sibling performance absolutely killed it. Ana Paulina in her party dress (yes, she changed into a shorter blue number for dancing) with her brother and sisters, all of them hitting their choreographed marks. Siblings who clearly practiced their routine, giving it everything they had on The Elan’s polished dance floor—this is what authentic celebration looks like.

The dance floor came alive. Guests of all ages got into it, moving to the music under The Elan’s coffered ceiling and turquoise uplighting. This is what happens when you’ve got a great DJ and a venue that understands how to create energy.

At some point, they got everyone involved in a group dance. I love when celebrations pull everyone in like this—it’s not just the young people having fun, it’s multiple generations coming together on the same dance floor.

By the cake table, Ana Paulina stood with her older brother and younger sister—both dressed in their party best. The giant “16” numbers glowed behind them, that four-tier Winter Wonderland cake waiting to be cut. These moments right before the cake cutting are when families let their guard down and just enjoy being together.

And this moment with grandfather by the cake? Pure gold. Cross-generational moments like this are exactly why family celebrations at The Elan work so well—the venue gives you space for both the big production moments and the quiet, intimate ones.

And finally, the cake. Ana Paulina, now in her party dress, getting ready to cut that four-tier Winter Wonderland cake. The crystal slipper on top, that big smile—she’d just had the night of her life, and you could see it all over her face.
As someone who’s shot countless events at this Route 46 venue, I can tell you exactly why families pick The Elan for their Sweet Sixteen celebrations. The space handles everything—intimate family moments and 100+ guest parties without missing a beat. The ballroom’s lighting system lets you create whatever mood you need, from soft and romantic to full party mode. And the staff knows exactly how to keep things flowing so families can actually enjoy the celebration instead of worrying about logistics.
For Ana Paulina’s family, The Elan gave them the perfect setup for their Winter Wonderland vision. The neutral backdrop let their custom decorations pop, and the venue’s built-in elegance meant they didn’t need to go overboard with extras. The fog machine for the dances, the uplighting in turquoise to match the theme, even the space for that elaborate throne setup—The Elan handled it all without breaking a sweat.
If you’re planning a Sweet Sixteen at The Elan Lodi NJ and want a photographer who gets the cultural significance of these celebrations, who knows how to work with The Elan’s lighting and spaces, and who’ll capture every tear, every laugh, and every dance move—let’s talk. I’ve been documenting these milestone moments in Bergen County for over 30 years, and I still get goosebumps when I see families come together like Ana Paulina’s did.

About Me — But Really, It’s About You
The most meaningful wedding photos never come from stiff poses.
They come from the quiet laugh you didn’t think anyone saw.
The look on your partner’s face during the vows.
The warmth of your people all around you.
I’ve been doing this for over 30 years — and I still get nervous before every wedding.
Not because I’m uncertain, but because I know how much it matters.
After photographing hundreds of weddings over the past few decades, I’ve learned something simple:
The best photos happen when you feel fully present.
That’s why I work calmly, behind the scenes — guiding when it helps, then stepping back when the real moments unfold. I’m always anticipating what’s next, so you never have to think about a thing.
My goal is simple: to help you relax, feel confident, and walk away with photos that feel like you — not a filtered version of someone else’s idea of perfect.
Most of my couples say the same thing:
“We’re so glad we didn’t have to worry.”
Alex made everything feel effortless — and the photos are incredible.”
