I’m Alex Kaplan, a wedding photographer and videographer based in New Milford, NJ, serving Northern NJ, NYC, and the Hudson Valley. For over 30 years, I’ve helped couples enjoy their day without feeling rushed — while I quietly capture the real moments, natural portraits, and genuine emotions you’ll still love decades from now.

If you’re planning a surprise proposal and looking for a quiet, beautiful location in New Jersey, Deep Cut Gardens in Middletown is honestly one of the best places for it.
I’ve photographed both surprise proposals and engagement shoots there, and I always recommend it to couples who want something low-key but still really meaningful. You get that peaceful garden vibe without dealing with crowds or city noise. And the light? Perfect — especially at sunset.
If you’ve never been there, Deep Cut is a public garden run by the Monmouth County Park System. It’s clean, well-kept, and has a bunch of little areas that are ideal for photography and private moments.
Some of my favorite proposal spots include:
You don’t have to go big and flashy — just a thoughtful setup with good light and a little planning can create something really memorable. I’ve had clients bring candles, a single flower, even hand-written notes. Doesn’t have to be overproduced — it just has to feel like you.
If you’re thinking about when to propose, golden hour (about 60–90 minutes before sunset) is when the light is soft, warm, and super flattering. You’ll avoid that harsh midday sun (no squinting), and the photos come out beautifully — especially if you want that romantic glow.
Even better, once the sun dips a little lower, Deep Cut starts to feel even more peaceful. That quiet ambiance adds to the whole vibe and helps you focus on the moment.
You will need to contact the park about a photography permit. It’s a simple process, but it’s best to call a few days in advance to confirm availability — especially if you’re aiming for a weekend or a popular season like May or October.
If you’re working with me, I’ll walk you through that — help you figure out where to propose, how to time it, and where I should be positioned to get the best shot. I’ve even pretended to be a park visitor with a camera so I don’t tip anyone off 😄
Here’s what you get:
There are no surprise fees. One flat price. I’ve been doing this for 30 years, and my goal is to keep it simple, personal, and real.
I get asked a lot: “Will it feel staged?” Not at all. The way I approach these sessions is very natural. I’ll help guide you so you’re in the right spot, but once the moment happens, I step back and just document it as it unfolds.
The emotions — surprise, tears, laughter — that’s what makes the photos powerful. And after the proposal, we usually take a short walk through the garden and grab a few more shots while everything still feels fresh.
✅ Check sunset time for your chosen date
✅ Call the park to ask about permits and availability
✅ Scout the location or arrive early to pick your spot
✅ Choose a cover story if it’s a true surprise
✅ Bring something meaningful (a note, a flower, a little prop)
✅ Hire a photographer who knows the grounds and the light
Do I need a permit to propose at Deep Cut Gardens?
Yes, if you’re bringing a photographer or planning a setup, the park usually requires a permit. It’s a quick call to Monmouth County Parks and worth doing in advance.
What’s the best time to propose there?
I always recommend golden hour — about 1 hour before sunset. That way you get the best light and less foot traffic.
Can you help us with the setup and timing?
Absolutely. I walk every client through the best spots, how to approach the moment naturally, and where I’ll be to get the shot without giving it away.
What if I want to propose first, then do an engagement session right after?
That’s included. Once the proposal’s done, we’ll take 20–30 minutes to get a mix of candid and posed shots around the gardens.
You don’t have to plan a big production to make a proposal feel special. Sometimes all you need is a quiet place, some good light, and someone who can help you capture the moment. Deep Cut Gardens checks all those boxes.
If you’re thinking about proposing there and want to talk through the details, I’m happy to help. Whether you just need quick advice or want to lock in a time, feel free to reach out.

About Me — But Really, It’s About You
The most meaningful wedding photos never come from stiff poses.
They come from the quiet laugh you didn’t think anyone saw.
The look on your partner’s face during the vows.
The warmth of your people all around you.
I’ve been doing this for over 30 years — and I still get nervous before every wedding.
Not because I’m uncertain, but because I know how much it matters.
After photographing hundreds of weddings over the past few decades, I’ve learned something simple:
The best photos happen when you feel fully present.
That’s why I work calmly, behind the scenes — guiding when it helps, then stepping back when the real moments unfold. I’m always anticipating what’s next, so you never have to think about a thing.
My goal is simple: to help you relax, feel confident, and walk away with photos that feel like you — not a filtered version of someone else’s idea of perfect.
Most of my couples say the same thing:
“We’re so glad we didn’t have to worry.”
