Angela & Zev’s Winter Engagement Session at Skylands Botanical Garden
January 23, 2026

I’m Alex Kaplan, a wedding photographer and videographer based in New Milford, NJ, serving Northern NJ, NYC, and the Hudson Valley. For over 30 years, I’ve helped couples enjoy their day without feeling rushed — while I quietly capture the real moments, natural portraits, and genuine emotions you’ll still love decades from now.

Angela and Zev showed up at Skylands Botanical Garden in Ringwood with an ease between them that you cannot fake. It was late winter, snow still on the ground, and the light was soft and clean. We used the stone arch, the entrance gates, and the long paths through the gardens, and let the session unfold without forcing anything.
Most couples choose spring or fall for engagement photos. Angela and Zev chose winter at Skylands, and it proved what I’ve been saying for years. Winter works. Snow adds texture. Bare trees create clean frames. Late afternoon light has a softness you do not get the same way in other seasons.
Skylands sits inside Ringwood State Park, and even in winter you have options. Stone buildings, garden paths, and that entrance gate with the gold bird details. The setting carries a lot of the visual weight, which means I can stay focused on the couple instead of hunting for backgrounds.

Angela wore a white dress with long sleeves. Zev wore a white shirt and dark pants. Simple choices that photograph well because the focus stays on them, not the wardrobe.
We started near the manor house at the stone archway. I gave them minimal direction. Stand here. Look at each other. Walk toward me. The rest happened naturally because they’re comfortable together and I’m not asking them to perform.

The entrance gates at Skylands are distinctive. Wood construction, gold bird cutouts, and the signage on either side. We shot there for a few minutes. The contrast between rustic wood and metallic details works especially well with snow on the ground.

Then we walked the garden paths. The tree-lined avenue gives you perspective and depth. Angela and Zev walked, held hands, stopped to look at each other. I followed and photographed what actually happened.

After 30 years of photographing people, I know what holds up. The best images come from moments, not poses. When Zev lifted Angela, I didn’t ask for it. When she laughed, that was real. Those are the photos that matter five years from now.
I give guidance when it helps. Move into better light. Turn slightly this way. Slow down for a second. But I’m not choreographing every moment. That’s how photos end up stiff and forgettable.

If you’re considering winter for your engagement session, here’s what to know. Dress for the temperature, but keep it clean. Angela’s long sleeves were practical and still photographed beautifully. Snow brings plenty of visual interest, so you do not need elaborate outfits to make the photos work.
Winter light happens earlier. We shot in strong late afternoon sun without staying out until 8 pm. The cold also keeps sessions focused. We moved efficiently, got variety, and wrapped before anyone was uncomfortable.

The shorter daylight window helps more than people expect. It forces you into the best light and keeps you from overthinking the session.

I’ve photographed engagement sessions throughout Northern New Jersey, the NYC metro area, Long Island, and the Hudson Valley. Skylands consistently delivers. You get variety without driving to multiple locations. Historic architecture, garden landscapes, wooded areas. Whatever aesthetic you want, it’s here.
Angela and Zev’s session worked because they showed up as themselves. The location provided the setting. I captured what unfolded. That’s the approach I take with every couple.
If you’re planning an engagement session and want photos that feel natural, reach out. Tell me your date and what kind of locations you’re drawn to, and we’ll build a plan that fits.

About Me — But Really, It’s About You
The most meaningful wedding photos never come from stiff poses.
They come from the quiet laugh you didn’t think anyone saw.
The look on your partner’s face during the vows.
The warmth of your people all around you.
I’ve been doing this for over 30 years — and I still get nervous before every wedding.
Not because I’m uncertain, but because I know how much it matters.
After photographing hundreds of weddings over the past few decades, I’ve learned something simple:
The best photos happen when you feel fully present.
That’s why I work calmly, behind the scenes — guiding when it helps, then stepping back when the real moments unfold. I’m always anticipating what’s next, so you never have to think about a thing.
My goal is simple: to help you relax, feel confident, and walk away with photos that feel like you — not a filtered version of someone else’s idea of perfect.
Most of my couples say the same thing:
“We’re so glad we didn’t have to worry.”
Alex made everything feel effortless — and the photos are incredible.”
Free parts of our entire wedding.
“One of the most stress"
Alex captured a version of me that actually felt confident and real.”

“I’ve always hated how"
