A cozy fall wedding at Mohawk House in Sparta, NJ—first look, outdoor ceremony, rustic reception, and timeless portraits by Alex Kaplan Weddings.
When Sidalia and Ken chose Mohawk House for their October 5th wedding, they knew exactly what they wanted: a celebration filled with warmth, family, and the natural beauty of fall in Northern New Jersey. As a Sparta NJ wedding photographer with over 30 years of experience, I’ve photographed countless weddings at venues across the region, but there’s something truly special about capturing love stories at Mohawk House.

Located at 1 Mohawk Lane in Sparta, New Jersey, Mohawk House offers couples the best of both worlds: stunning outdoor ceremony spaces surrounded by nature and a beautifully rustic indoor reception venue. For Sidalia and Ken, the venue’s combination of great value and gorgeous scenery made it an easy choice. The property’s mature trees, wooden fencing, and natural landscape create a picturesque backdrop that’s especially breathtaking during fall wedding season.
If you’re considering a fall wedding at Mohawk House, Sidalia and Ken’s October celebration is the perfect example of what makes this venue shine during autumn. The wedding colors of copper, muted golden oranges, and muted golden yellows complemented the natural fall foliage perfectly. The outdoor ceremony space, weather permitting, offers dappled sunlight filtering through the trees creating that soft, romantic lighting every photographer dreams of capturing.

One of my favorite parts of any wedding day is the first look, and Sidalia and Ken’s was absolutely beautiful. We started coverage at noon, giving us plenty of time to capture this intimate moment before the ceremony. When Ken first saw Sidalia in her elegant dress with its delicate beaded bodice and flowing skirt, his reaction was priceless. The joy on both their faces as they embraced in the dappled sunlight showed exactly why they chose to see each other before the ceremony it gave them a private moment to simply be together before the celebration began.
Sidalia looked radiant in her classic white gown, complete with a sparkling hair accessory and elegant drop earrings. Ken’s floral-patterned tie added a unique, personal touch to his sage green suit, perfectly coordinating with the fall wedding theme. These details, created by Petals Florist, tied the entire aesthetic together beautifully.

After the first look, we moved into family portraits. This is where the magic of Mohawk House’s outdoor spaces really shines for photography. The natural wood fencing, stone pathways, and lush greenery provided varied backdrops just steps away from each other. We captured portraits with Sidalia’s siblings Manny, Anna, and Lisa along with Ken’s siblings James, Sheryl, Tammy, and Terry, and his three sons Kifton, Konnor, and Kameron.
One particularly touching moment came when Sidalia shared an embrace with her sister, their pure joy evident in every frame. These authentic family connections are what wedding photography is really about not just posed portraits, but genuine emotion captured as it happens.

At 1:30 PM, surrounded by approximately 90 of their closest family and friends, Sidalia and Ken exchanged vows in Mohawk House’s outdoor ceremony space. The wooden arbor, draped in copper-toned fabric and adorned with fall florals including roses, dahlias, and dried grasses, framed the couple perfectly. The autumn sunlight created beautiful natural lighting conditions every photographer’s dream for an outdoor ceremony.
As one of Ken’s sons walked Sidalia down the aisle, you could see the emotion on Ken’s face as he watched his bride approach. These are the moments that make 30 years of wedding photography still feel fresh and meaningful to me. The ceremony was intimate, personal, and filled with the kind of real emotion that makes wedding photographs timeless.
Their first kiss as husband and wife, followed by their joyful recessional with raised arms and beaming smiles, perfectly captured their excitement and happiness.

One of the standout features of a Mohawk House wedding is the stunning reception space. The exposed brick walls in a distinctive herringbone pattern, soaring wooden beam ceilings, and vintage industrial touches (including a “New York Flower Co.” sign) create an atmosphere that’s both rustic and refined. This is what sets Mohawk House apart from other wedding venues in Sparta, NJ the character of the space speaks for itself.
The reception room’s large windows flood the space with natural light during cocktail hour and early reception, transitioning to a warm, intimate ambiance as evening falls. For a wedding photographer, this versatility is invaluable. The stone and brick textures, wooden architectural details, and vintage lighting fixtures provide countless opportunities for beautiful, timeless photographs.
Sidalia and Ken’s reception details perfectly complemented Mohawk House’s rustic aesthetic. Long farm tables were dressed with crisp white linens and copper-colored fabric runners that echoed their fall color palette. Small arrangements of fall florals, dried grasses, and pampas grass created texture and visual interest without overwhelming the table settings.
The couple’s wedding cake was simple and elegant a white buttercream design adorned with fall flowers and a custom “Mr & Mrs” wooden topper, displayed alongside decorative pumpkins that added a seasonal touch. These thoughtful details created a cohesive fall wedding aesthetic that felt intentional but not overdone.

As the reception began, the joy in the room was palpable. Ken’s grand entrance, waving to guests with Sidalia at his side, set the tone for a celebration filled with laughter, dancing, and genuine connection. Their first dance, lit by candlelight in Mohawk House’s intimate reception space, was tender and romantic.

Throughout the evening, guests filled the dance floor from Ken’s playful moments with family members to Sidalia’s pure joy as she celebrated with loved ones. Chuck Russo kept the energy high all evening, creating the perfect soundtrack for this celebration. These candid moments of celebration the laughter, the tears of joy, the uninhibited dancing are what make wedding photography meaningful. They’re the images couples return to again and again, remembering not just how the day looked, but how it felt.

With approximately 90 guests, Sidalia and Ken’s wedding was the perfect size for Mohawk House. The venue excels at creating an intimate atmosphere where guests feel connected to the celebration. Unlike larger venues where guests can feel spread out or disconnected, Mohawk House brings everyone together in spaces that feel personal and warm.
As a wedding photographer, I love working at Mohawk House because it offers such variety for portraits:
The venue’s layout also makes timeline planning straightforward. Everything happens in one location, which means more time for photographs and less time spent on transportation.
If you’re considering Mohawk House for your wedding, here are some insights from photographing Sidalia and Ken’s celebration:
Outdoor Ceremony Considerations: The outdoor ceremony space is absolutely beautiful, but have a backup plan. October weather in Northern New Jersey can be unpredictable, so confirm the venue’s indoor ceremony option.
Timeline: Starting coverage at noon for a 1:30 PM ceremony gave us ample time for a first look and family portraits before the ceremony. This approach meant Sidalia and Ken could enjoy their entire cocktail hour with guests.
Lighting: The natural light at Mohawk House is exceptional for fall afternoon weddings. The ceremony lighting around 1:30-2:00 PM in early October was absolutely perfect.
Guest Count: The venue feels intimate and warm with 87-90 guests, creating that personal atmosphere many couples desire.
Parking: Open parking lot makes guest arrival and departure easy and stress-free.
Sidalia and Ken worked with Rachael Perrone-Scro and Joy Theil, the venue coordinators at Mohawk House, who ensured everything ran smoothly. Having experienced coordinators on-site is invaluable for keeping the day on schedule and handling any unexpected situations.
Petals Florist created stunning arrangements that perfectly captured the fall aesthetic Sidalia and Ken envisioned. The bouquets combined burnt orange roses, deep burgundy dahlias, dried pampas grass, and eucalyptus textures and colors that photographed beautifully and complemented the venue’s rustic character.
After 30 years as a wedding photographer serving Northern New Jersey, NYC, and the Hudson Valley, I can honestly say that Mohawk House offers something special. It’s not trying to be something it’s not the venue embraces its rustic, authentic character and gives couples a beautiful canvas to create their own celebration.
For Sidalia and Ken, Mohawk House provided exactly what they were looking for: a beautiful setting, great value, and a warm atmosphere where their families could come together. Capturing their genuine emotion, from Ken’s reaction during the first look to their joyful first dance, reminded me why I fell in love with wedding photography three decades ago.
Every glance, every laugh, every tear was preserved as part of their story, photographs that feel real, emotional, and unmistakably them.

About Me — But Really, It’s About You
The most meaningful wedding photos never come from stiff poses.
They come from the quiet laugh you didn’t think anyone saw.
The look on your partner’s face during the vows.
The warmth of your people all around you.
I’ve been doing this for over 30 years — and I still get nervous before every wedding.
Not because I’m uncertain, but because I know how much it matters.
After photographing hundreds of weddings over the past few decades, I’ve learned something simple:
The best photos happen when you feel fully present.
That’s why I work calmly, behind the scenes — guiding when it helps, then stepping back when the real moments unfold. I’m always anticipating what’s next, so you never have to think about a thing.
My goal is simple: to help you relax, feel confident, and walk away with photos that feel like you — not a filtered version of someone else’s idea of perfect.
Most of my couples say the same thing:
“We’re so glad we didn’t have to worry.”
