I’m Alex Kaplan, a wedding photographer and videographer based in New Milford, NJ, serving Northern NJ, NYC, and the Hudson Valley. For over 30 years, I’ve helped couples enjoy their day without feeling rushed — while I quietly capture the real moments, natural portraits, and genuine emotions you’ll still love decades from now.
There’s something about a New York City rooftop that feels like the world pauses for a second. The skyline, the air, the space above everything — it’s the kind of environment where big moments just make sense.
For this surprise proposal, the groom-to-be planned everything with intention: red and white roses, a quiet rooftop with a clear view of the Empire State Building, and a gathering of the people who mattered most. As a Northern New Jersey and NYC proposal photographer with over 30 years of experience and 580+ five-star reviews, I’ve seen a lot of proposals — from waterfront boardwalks to hidden parks to busy city streets — but the combination of planning, emotion, and location made this one feel especially meaningful.
This rooftop had the right balance of intimate and dramatic. The rose arrangements framed the space naturally, the greenery softened the city surroundings, and the skyline did the rest. You could see the Hudson River, the Empire State Building, and just enough of Manhattan to remind you where you were — without pulling attention away from the moment itself.
Friends and family waited quietly, trying to play it cool while holding back excitement. The bride-to-be arrived blindfolded, completely unaware of what she was walking into. The air changed a little — that shared anticipation you can feel before something big happens.

When the blindfold came off, everything landed at once. The roses, the skyline, the people she loves — and the man waiting for her. Her expression told the whole story before a word was spoken. Eyes welling up, hand to her face, one breath in. Nothing staged — just pure reaction.
This is why my position is planned ahead of time. Proposal photography is less about clicking a shutter and more about reading energy. After decades photographing proposals across Northern New Jersey and NYC, anticipating the moment becomes instinctive.

He dropped to one knee surrounded by roses and the Manhattan skyline behind them. The rest of the world disappeared — no rooftop, no city, no noise — just the question that changes everything.

Seconds later — the “yes,” the ring on her finger, and that kiss. This is the sequence you can’t stage or recreate. It’s why timing and positioning matter so much in proposal photography.

After the initial proposal moment, the celebration kicked in. Bubbles filled the air, adding movement and magic to an already perfect scene with the Empire State Building behind them.

Lots of smiling, laughing, and looking at the ring again… and again.
Once the initial excitement settled, we shifted into portraits while the light was still perfect. Golden hour on a Manhattan rooftop is its own kind of magic — the skyline softens, the air warms up, and everything feels cinematic.

Playful moments, quiet moments, emotional moments — all equally important.

The celebration energy says everything.
A proposal happens once. There are no reshoots.
What experience gives you:
My goal is always the same: capture the moment as it felt — not just how it looked.
Whether you’re planning a Manhattan rooftop proposal, a Bergen County park surprise, or a Hudson River waterfront moment, I’ve photographed proposals across every type of location in the tri-state area. After 30 years, the technical side becomes second nature. What matters most is understanding people and timing.
How far in advance should I book?
2–4 weeks is ideal, but I also handle last-minute proposals.
What if the weather changes?
We plan backup options ahead of time — rooftops, parks, indoor overlooks.
How do you stay hidden?
I blend in — as a guest, passerby, or with distance + zoom. We plan it together.
How many photos do we receive?
Typically 75–150+ fully edited, high-resolution images.
Do you travel?
Yes — throughout Northern NJ, NYC, Hudson Valley, and beyond.
If you’re planning a proposal in Northern New Jersey, NYC, Hoboken, Jersey City, Bergen County, or the Hudson Valley, I’d love to help you document it.

About Me — But Really, It’s About You
The most meaningful wedding photos never come from stiff poses.
They come from the quiet laugh you didn’t think anyone saw.
The look on your partner’s face during the vows.
The warmth of your people all around you.
I’ve been doing this for over 30 years — and I still get nervous before every wedding.
Not because I’m uncertain, but because I know how much it matters.
After photographing hundreds of weddings over the past few decades, I’ve learned something simple:
The best photos happen when you feel fully present.
That’s why I work calmly, behind the scenes — guiding when it helps, then stepping back when the real moments unfold. I’m always anticipating what’s next, so you never have to think about a thing.
My goal is simple: to help you relax, feel confident, and walk away with photos that feel like you — not a filtered version of someone else’s idea of perfect.
Most of my couples say the same thing:
“We’re so glad we didn’t have to worry.”
Alex made everything feel effortless — and the photos are incredible.”
