A Mt. Fuji Proposal at The Views at Mount Fuji (Hillburn, NY)
November 11, 2025

I’m Alex Kaplan, a wedding photographer and videographer based in New Milford, NJ, serving Northern NJ, NYC, and the Hudson Valley. For over 30 years, I’ve helped couples enjoy their day without feeling rushed — while I quietly capture the real moments, natural portraits, and genuine emotions you’ll still love decades from now.

I knew this one would be good the moment I saw the gazebo. The Views at Mount Fuji in Hillburn, NY has that rare mix of tranquil gardens, Japanese architecture, and a skyline of trees that makes everything feel cinematic. On an overcast winter afternoon—thin cloud cover that softened skin tones and made her pink beret pop—he dropped to one knee by the white Victorian gazebo. Her reaction? Pure joy. The kind that makes proposal photography in the Hudson Valley worth doing for thirty years.
He’d reached out two weeks earlier with a simple message: “I want to propose at Mount Fuji. Can you make it look cinematic?” Challenge accepted.
We planned everything carefully, choosing the gazebo as the focal point. The winter mist created this dreamy atmosphere that you just can’t replicate. When he got down on one knee, her genuine surprise and happiness gave us exactly what we needed—real emotion that translates powerfully in photos.

The first kiss as an engaged couple—that’s always gold. These two were absolutely glowing. (Want to see more moments like this? Check out my proposal portfolio.)

After the proposal, we moved through the venue’s different settings. Her pink beret and coat gave us a consistent color story that worked beautifully against the neutral winter landscape and traditional architecture.

I always shoot both color and black-and-white during proposals. Monochrome strips away distractions and puts all the focus on emotion and connection. Some of the strongest images from this session came through without color.

The Views at Mount Fuji blends traditional Japanese elements with seasonal American touches—like the holiday wreaths on the ornate doorways. It creates unique backdrops you won’t find anywhere else in the Hudson Valley.

The zen gardens with stone arrangements, traditional bridges, and statuary gave us romantic frames with cultural depth. The red bridge especially created striking contrast.

The towering red torii gate—traditional Japanese gates that mark entrances to sacred spaces—is the showstopper here. The scale, bold color, and cultural significance create dramatic images.

After shooting here, I can tell you exactly why this venue stands out:
Multiple looks, one location: Gazebo, red bridge, torii gate, and gardens—you get fast variety without driving between spots.
Flattering light: Overcast or golden hour both work beautifully across the neutral architecture and greenery. Don’t fear gray skies here.
Semi-private pockets: Enough space to stage a proposal without crowds hovering over your moment.
Photo-ready details: Clean lines and bold colors that photograph well in both color and black-and-white.
Year-round appeal: Spring blooms, summer greenery, autumn colors, or winter’s stark beauty—every season delivers.
From a photographer’s perspective, here’s what works:
Weather: Cloud cover gives you soft, even skin tones. Overcast is actually ideal.
Wardrobe: Pick one accent color (like her pink) and build neutrals around it. Avoid busy patterns.
Route: Gazebo → gardens/bridge → torii gate. Plan 10 minutes at each location to keep energy high.
Timing: Weekdays near sunset are quietest. Call ahead to check availability—the venue can get busy during peak dining hours.
Coordination: Share your live location with your photographer and use a simple hand signal when you arrive—keeps the surprise intact.
Permits: The Views at Mount Fuji is accommodating for photography, but confirm ahead if you’re planning an elaborate setup. Most simple proposals require just courtesy and respect for other guests.

Proposal photography is about capturing unrehearsed emotion that won’t happen again. This Mt. Fuji proposal had everything—the right location, the right moment, two people genuinely in love. Being there to document it is exactly why I do this work.
He told me afterward he’d been carrying the ring for three weeks, waiting for the perfect weather. Turns out, the overcast sky was better than any sunny day could have been.

About Me — But Really, It’s About You
The most meaningful wedding photos never come from stiff poses.
They come from the quiet laugh you didn’t think anyone saw.
The look on your partner’s face during the vows.
The warmth of your people all around you.
I’ve been doing this for over 30 years — and I still get nervous before every wedding.
Not because I’m uncertain, but because I know how much it matters.
After photographing hundreds of weddings over the past few decades, I’ve learned something simple:
The best photos happen when you feel fully present.
That’s why I work calmly, behind the scenes — guiding when it helps, then stepping back when the real moments unfold. I’m always anticipating what’s next, so you never have to think about a thing.
My goal is simple: to help you relax, feel confident, and walk away with photos that feel like you — not a filtered version of someone else’s idea of perfect.
Most of my couples say the same thing:
“We’re so glad we didn’t have to worry.”
Alex made everything feel effortless — and the photos are incredible.”
Free parts of our entire wedding.
“One of the most stress"
Alex captured a version of me that actually felt confident and real.”
