I’m Alex Kaplan, a wedding photographer and videographer based in New Milford, NJ, serving Northern NJ, NYC, and the Hudson Valley. For over 30 years, I’ve helped couples enjoy their day without feeling rushed — while I quietly capture the real moments, natural portraits, and genuine emotions you’ll still love decades from now.
A gondola proposal at the Loeb Boathouse in Central Park has a feeling to it that’s hard to describe until you’re actually there. The lake is calm, the trees frame the water, and even though you’re in the middle of Manhattan, it feels like everything slows down for a moment.
When this couple reached out about proposing on the gondola, I knew it was going to be a special one. This spot has a way of creating a quiet little world just for two people.

The gondola at Loeb Boathouse is one of the few places in New York where you get privacy and the feeling of being surrounded by the city at the same time. Even with people nearby, the moment stays yours.
We timed the ride for golden hour — when the light hits the water just right. The gondolier set an easy pace, giving them space to relax and just be with each other before everything changed.
I positioned myself around the boathouse and along the lake so I could capture the entire story without interrupting it.

The moments before a proposal are always full of energy — not big, dramatic energy, but the kind you notice in the small things. A deeper breath. A tighter hand hold. A smile that lingers just a beat longer.
She was relaxed and happy, enjoying the ride and the view, completely unaware of what was coming.

When he reached for the ring, the whole atmosphere shifted. She covered her face with both hands, laughing and crying at the same time, before leaning into him like she didn’t want to let go. It was one of those reactions you feel the second it happens.
These moments can’t be posed — you just let them unfold and make sure you’re ready.

After photographing proposals across Northern New Jersey, NYC, and the Hudson Valley — from Bow Bridge to Bethesda Terrace — the Loeb Boathouse gondola consistently delivers:
Privacy without isolation – You’re surrounded by the park’s energy, but the gondola creates an intimate world just for you.
Romance that doesn’t feel staged – The Venetian gondola, the emerald water, the classic architecture — it’s naturally beautiful.
Photos that feel natural and real – The setting encourages genuine connection. You’re not performing; you’re just there together.
Beautiful in every season – Spring blossoms, summer green, fall foliage, winter light — this location works year-round.

During a proposal, I move quietly and anticipate what’s coming — without interrupting the moment. I switch between wide shots that show the full setting and close-ups that capture the emotion you’ll remember years from now.
The couple stays in the moment. I make sure nothing is missed.

The striped shirt, the carved wood, the burgundy leather seats, the reflections on the water — these are the details that bring the memory back every time you look at the photos.

A few things that make a difference:
Golden hour is the best light – Book your gondola for the hour before sunset. The soft, warm glow transforms everything.
Book ahead – Gondola spots fill fast, especially spring through fall. Reserve early.
Coordinate in advance – When we plan positioning ahead of time, nothing is left to chance.
Leave time after – The ride lasts about 30 minutes. Plan extra time to celebrate and take portraits together on the grounds.
“We’re both awkward in front of cameras, but Alex made the whole experience feel natural. The proposal photos are exactly what we hoped for — real and emotional.” — Recent Loeb Boathouse proposal
After 580+ five-star reviews, the consistent feedback is that couples feel at ease pretty quickly — even those who thought they’d be camera-shy.
A lot of couples I photograph for their proposals end up booking me for their weddings. There’s something valuable about having the same photographer who captured this moment also there on your wedding day — I already know how you move together, what makes you laugh, the way you look at each other.
If you’re planning a proposal in Central Park — whether on the gondola, Bow Bridge, Bethesda Terrace, or anywhere across NYC, Northern New Jersey, or the Hudson Valley — I’d love to help you plan and photograph it.
Your proposal should feel like you. I’ll make sure the photos feel like that too.

I’m a wedding and engagement photographer based in Northern New Jersey. My approach is straightforward: real emotion, genuine connection, and photographs that feel natural and personal. Whether it’s a gondola proposal at the Loeb Boathouse or a wedding celebration upstate, I’ll make sure your photos feel unmistakably you.
About Me — But Really, It’s About You
The most meaningful wedding photos never come from stiff poses.
They come from the quiet laugh you didn’t think anyone saw.
The look on your partner’s face during the vows.
The warmth of your people all around you.
I’ve been doing this for over 30 years — and I still get nervous before every wedding.
Not because I’m uncertain, but because I know how much it matters.
After photographing hundreds of weddings over the past few decades, I’ve learned something simple:
The best photos happen when you feel fully present.
That’s why I work calmly, behind the scenes — guiding when it helps, then stepping back when the real moments unfold. I’m always anticipating what’s next, so you never have to think about a thing.
My goal is simple: to help you relax, feel confident, and walk away with photos that feel like you — not a filtered version of someone else’s idea of perfect.
Most of my couples say the same thing:
“We’re so glad we didn’t have to worry.”
Alex made everything feel effortless — and the photos are incredible.”
