I’m Alex Kaplan, a wedding photographer and videographer based in New Milford, NJ, serving Northern NJ, NYC, and the Hudson Valley. You know those engagement parties that just feel right the moment you arrive? That’s exactly what happened when I photographed this stunning “That’s Amore” celebration in Somerset, New Jersey. The couple transformed their backyard into this romantic Italian dreamscape, and honestly, every corner was more Instagram-worthy than the last. As a Somerset NJ backyard engagement party photographer, I’ve seen plenty of creative setups, but this one really stood out.

The moment I walked into this Somerset backyard, I knew this wasn’t your typical engagement party. The couple went all-in on an Italian theme, and the centerpiece was this incredible custom backdrop that honestly looked like it belonged in a magazine spread. The red and white striped awning design, the “That’s Amore” signage, woven plates arranged like art on the wall, cascading red florals, and that gorgeous balloon installation – it was the perfect blend of whimsy and elegance.

Here’s what I love about backyard parties in Somerset- you get this perfect mix of privacy and personality that you just can’t replicate at a commercial venue. This particular backyard offered plenty of open space surrounded by mature trees, giving us that natural buffer from the outside world. The hosts completely transformed the space with their Italian market-inspired setup, proving that you don’t need a fancy venue when you have vision and creativity.
The lawn provided the perfect canvas for all their decorative elements, and the natural light filtering through the trees during that summer evening? Chef’s kiss. Somerset’s residential areas offer these beautiful, established properties with real character, and this backyard was no exception.

The bride-to-be looked absolutely radiant in her white gown – classic, elegant, and perfect for the occasion. You could just see how excited she was, and that genuine joy is what makes these photos come alive.

One of the coolest elements? They set up this adorable flower bar where guests could create their own bouquets. Baby’s breath, red roses, sunflowers, peach roses – they had options for every taste. The rustic wooden bar topped with a fringed umbrella gave it that Italian market vibe, and the hand-lettered chalkboard sign invited everyone to “Take a Bouquet and Take Your Lovely Way.”

This is the kind of detail that makes a party memorable – not just beautiful to look at, but interactive and fun for guests. Everyone left with their own custom bouquet and a great memory.

What I loved most about this Somerset engagement party was how relaxed and happy everyone was. There’s something special about celebrating in your own space – no venue restrictions, no time limits, just pure celebration.

And then we got this moment- him kissing her cheek while she holds that gorgeous bouquet of red roses, both of them glowing with happiness. This is why I do what I do. These genuine moments of connection and joy.
The final group shot says it all – look at this community that showed up to celebrate! Everyone dressed in gorgeous floral patterns and summer colors, gathering around the happy couple in this beautifully decorated Somerset backyard. From aunties in traditional Indian attire to friends in sundresses, this party brought together everyone who matters.

After photographing hundreds of celebrations across Northern New Jersey, I can tell you that backyard engagement parties have a special magic. You get to personalize every single detail, there’s no venue fee eating into your budget (which means more money for the things that really matter), and your guests feel comfortable because it’s intimate and personal.
This Somerset celebration proved that you don’t need a ballroom to throw an unforgettable party. With some creativity, thoughtful details, and a clear theme, a backyard becomes the perfect venue for celebrating your love story.

Because at the end of the day, it’s not about the fancy venue – it’s about the love you’re celebrating and the people who show up to cheer you on. Ready to talk about your Somerset NJ backyard engagement party? Let’s make it happen.
About Me — But Really, It’s About You
The most meaningful wedding photos never come from stiff poses.
They come from the quiet laugh you didn’t think anyone saw.
The look on your partner’s face during the vows.
The warmth of your people all around you.
I’ve been doing this for over 30 years — and I still get nervous before every wedding.
Not because I’m uncertain, but because I know how much it matters.
After photographing hundreds of weddings over the past few decades, I’ve learned something simple:
The best photos happen when you feel fully present.
That’s why I work calmly, behind the scenes — guiding when it helps, then stepping back when the real moments unfold. I’m always anticipating what’s next, so you never have to think about a thing.
My goal is simple: to help you relax, feel confident, and walk away with photos that feel like you — not a filtered version of someone else’s idea of perfect.
Most of my couples say the same thing:
“We’re so glad we didn’t have to worry.”
Alex made everything feel effortless — and the photos are incredible.”
Free parts of our entire wedding.
“One of the most stress"
Alex captured a version of me that actually felt confident and real.”
