A Magical Proposal at Grounds for Sculpture | Mario & Erika’s Love Story
November 7, 2025

I’m Alex Kaplan, a wedding photographer and videographer based in New Milford, NJ, serving Northern NJ, NYC, and the Hudson Valley. For over 30 years, I’ve helped couples enjoy their day without feeling rushed — while I quietly capture the real moments, natural portraits, and genuine emotions you’ll still love decades from now.

Erika thought we were just taking some casual photos. She picked out her blue floral dress, did her hair, showed up to Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton ready for what she thought was a cute couples session with her boyfriend Mario.
She had absolutely no idea what was about to happen.

We started on the iconic green bridge — you know the one if you’ve ever scrolled through Grounds for Sculpture photos on Instagram. Weeping willows, dappled sunlight, the whole thing. I was shooting what looked like regular couple portraits.
And then Mario got down on one knee.
The look on her face. That split second where you can see her brain trying to catch up with what’s happening — pure surprise, happy tears, all of it. These moments? You can’t fake them. You can’t recreate them. This is exactly why I love surprise proposals.

She said yes.

Grounds for Sculpture is one of those places where you get everything. 42 acres of sculpture park in Hamilton Township — over 270 contemporary art pieces just tucked into gardens and pathways and these quiet corners you stumble onto.
Here’s what I love about it for proposals: the sheer variety. That famous Japanese bridge everyone knows. Contemporary sculptures that could be in a museum. Hidden garden spots. Tree corridors that make you feel like you walked into Narnia or something. And it’s only about an hour from Philly or NYC, so it’s not some impossible trek to get there.

Mario had planned it all perfectly. The cover story worked (she really thought it was just a photoshoot). The timing was right — that golden hour light doesn’t lie. And somehow he kept the secret, which if you’ve ever tried to keep a secret from someone you see every day, you know that’s the hardest part.
After she said yes, we just wandered around for the next hour or so. No rush. No checklist. Just two people who were engaged and kind of in shock about it in the best way possible.
We explored. That’s what’s great about 42 acres — you’re not stuck in one spot.
The Tree Corridor
There’s this one pathway with trees lining both sides, and it creates this natural tunnel effect. Mario and Erika just walked through it. That’s it. No posing, no “stand here and look at each other.” They were in their own world.

The Water & Gardens
Down by the pond, those colorful buildings reflecting in the water — Erika kept doing this thing where she’d look at her ring, then look at Mario, then back at the ring like “wait, is this really happening?”

The Sculptures
We found this wooden torii gate. And later, this insane contemporary metal sculpture with all these flowing ribbon forms. They didn’t really need to do anything — just stood there and the art pretty much framed them.

The Ring
Her solitaire caught the light every time she moved her hand. Had to get that detail shot — it’s the one you’ll send to literally everyone.

Everywhere Else
We kept finding spots. Architectural elements, brick walls, this modern green metal structure. The place just keeps going.

Some things I’ve picked up from shooting here:
The cover story matters. Mario told Erika they were doing a photoshoot. Worked perfectly because it actually made sense — why else would there be a photographer there?
Go on a weekday afternoon if you can. Way less crowded. More privacy for the actual proposal, and I’m not trying to photoshop tourists out of the background later.
Scout it beforehand — or work with someone who knows the place. Some of the best spots aren’t obvious. Like that tree corridor? Not even on the main path.
Have a plan for celebrating after. Rat’s Restaurant is right there on the grounds. Champagne, done.
Call ahead. They do proposals all the time. Just let them know what’s happening so nobody’s caught off guard.

📋 Don’t Forget:
I’d love to help you plan it and be there to capture it. Whether it’s here or somewhere else in New Jersey — let’s talk.
Grounds for Sculpture is at 80 Sculptors Way in Hamilton Township, NJ. It’s open year-round, though hours vary by season. They have memberships if you plan to visit often, plus on-site dining and a gift shop. It’s about an hour from Philly or NYC, so it’s doable as a day trip.
Here’s the thing — you get one shot at this moment. No do-overs when she realizes what’s happening.
That’s what makes it good. Everything’s real. The tears, the laugh-crying, the way she covers her face or just completely loses it — none of that’s planned. And those first couple minutes after she says yes? When you’re both just standing there like “holy shit, we’re engaged”? That’s the stuff you’ll want to remember.
When you have a photographer there, you’re not fumbling with your phone or trying to hand it to some random person. You just get to be in it.
This is why I do this. Every couple’s different, but that moment when someone says yes? It’s the same feeling every time. Hope, excitement, holy crap we’re doing this — all at once.
Mario nailed it. Erika had no clue. And now they’ve got these photos to look back on — not just pretty pictures, but actual proof of exactly how they felt in that moment.
That’s what matters.
If you’re planning a proposal — at Grounds for Sculpture or anywhere in New Jersey — hit me up. I’d love to help you figure it out and be there to shoot it.

About Me — But Really, It’s About You
The most meaningful wedding photos never come from stiff poses.
They come from the quiet laugh you didn’t think anyone saw.
The look on your partner’s face during the vows.
The warmth of your people all around you.
I’ve been doing this for over 30 years — and I still get nervous before every wedding.
Not because I’m uncertain, but because I know how much it matters.
After photographing hundreds of weddings over the past few decades, I’ve learned something simple:
The best photos happen when you feel fully present.
That’s why I work calmly, behind the scenes — guiding when it helps, then stepping back when the real moments unfold. I’m always anticipating what’s next, so you never have to think about a thing.
My goal is simple: to help you relax, feel confident, and walk away with photos that feel like you — not a filtered version of someone else’s idea of perfect.
Most of my couples say the same thing:
“We’re so glad we didn’t have to worry.”
Alex made everything feel effortless — and the photos are incredible.”
Free parts of our entire wedding.
“One of the most stress"
Alex captured a version of me that actually felt confident and real.”
