I’m Alex Kaplan, a wedding photographer and videographer based in New Milford, NJ, serving Northern NJ, NYC, and the Hudson Valley. For over 30 years, I’ve helped couples enjoy their day without feeling rushed, while I quietly capture the real moments, natural portraits, and genuine emotions you’ll still love decades from now.
Andrew proposed to Emily here on August 22, and their photographs are the clearest answer I can give anyone asking what this garden actually looks like in summer.
By late August the beds are full. The roses are past their late spring peak but still carrying color, the hedges are dense, and the trees behind the pergola are fully leafed out.
That mass of green is what closes the frame around a couple. In an open public garden, the planting is what gives you intimacy, not the size of the property.

Their session ran in the afternoon rather than the last hour of daylight. Worth knowing, because some planted sections hold soft open shade long before sunset does, which gives you more usable summer hours than most people assume.

What their pictures show best is the part right after. Emily’s hand goes up, they look at the ring together, and inside a couple of minutes they are simply standing in the garden holding onto each other.

That handoff from proposal to portraits is why I keep pointing couples toward Deep Cut for summer. Nobody has to drive anywhere afterward.

The rose parterre, the boxwood paths, and the pergola all sit within a short walk, and nine minutes after he knelt down they were already making portraits.

If you are planning something similar, that sequence is the core of how I work as a proposal photographer in New Jersey: plan the moment carefully, then keep shooting once it is over.
About Me — But Really, It’s About You
The most meaningful wedding photos never come from stiff poses.
They come from the quiet laugh you didn’t think anyone saw.
The look on your partner’s face during the vows.
The warmth of your people all around you.
I’ve been doing this for over 30 years — and I still get nervous before every wedding.
Not because I’m uncertain, but because I know how much it matters.
After photographing hundreds of weddings over the past few decades, I’ve learned something simple:
The best photos happen when you feel fully present.
That’s why I work calmly, behind the scenes — guiding when it helps, then stepping back when the real moments unfold. I’m always anticipating what’s next, so you never have to think about a thing.
My goal is simple: to help you relax, feel confident, and walk away with photos that feel like you — not a filtered version of someone else’s idea of perfect.
Most of my couples say the same thing:
“We’re so glad we didn’t have to worry.”
